On April 7, 2011, the #FDA issued an alert about over the counter (#OTC) #benzocaine gels and liquids applied to the gums and mouth that could have fatal side effects. It advised against using popular teething gels in kids under the age of 2, except under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Wonder when the manufacturer was going to warn us?
The fatal condition, #methemglobenia, is rare but infants who cannot communicate symptoms are vulnerable. Unknowing parents are equally at risk. Where is the warning on the package? There was none about death, or potentially killing your teething infant while trying to sooth them. Makes you wonder doesn’t it.
